BitTorrent Now officially launches on iOS and Apple TV along with BitTorrent Live
A couple of after the the streaming app BitTorrent Now was released for Android only, it has announced its launch on iOS device and Apple TV, which are the most popular platform to Apple users. This service allows users to stream a variety of content including music and videos. Another service that comes along is called BitTorrent Live, which has its own news transport network.
BitTorrent has been working hard on building and running its own network — right after recruiting a news director last month, it has now announced the first broadcast in Cleveland on Monday.
It makes good use of two media consumption patterns – VOD and live broadcast, winning the joints of many old and new publishers. They signed on to share content on the BitTorrent Now platform, including the Onion, Super Deluxe, and IHeartComix. Right ater opening the BitTorrent Now app, users will be able to choose from all kinds of content from those publishers and more.
While BitTorrent has gained a reputation for the variety of illegal content often shared, BitTorrent Now is entirely legal. Some of the content is free, some is paid, and some is ad-supported.
Although BitTorrent only supports iOS device and Apple TV at present, it will soon march to other popular platforms. Because BitTorrent Now is entirely legal, BitTorrent can finally launch true apps for iOS and tvOS, something that it hasn’t been able to do in the past.
With BitTorrent Now, fans can find films from artists they love on their iPhone during their commute and then favorite to stream later on the couch in front of their Apple TV. They’ll also have the ability to follow artists they love, create playlists, and see what’s trending on social or in the BitTorrent community.
The challenge for BitTorrent Now is in Carving out a niche for itself among when there are so many other avenues available for content discovery, including from the “indie” artists that BitTorrent is after. In addition to SoundCloud, artists can share their work on Bandcamp, YouTube, Vimeo or even their own websites or larger social networks, like Facebook.
