Earlier this week, after Apple discovered the problematic macOS Mojave security update 2020-005 and Safari 14 (for macOS Mojave), they have been withdrawn. At that time, the update, for users who downloaded them, have caused problems, including system freezes, slow startup times, fast fan speeds, and memory issues.

The macOS Mojave 10.16.6 update released on Friday should resolve the above issues for users who have installed security update 2020-005. Apple has also re-released the Safari 14.0 update to macOS Mojave users, possibly with bug fixes related to issues reported in the previous version.

As stated by Apple, it also introduces the security features of the previous version. Users can download the supplemental update of macOS Mojave from the “System Preferences” menu.

Security researchers revealed that many Xcode projects have been found to contain malware that can attack Safari and other browsers, while the discovery of XCSSET malware caused their entrance into Mac software projects through unknown means.

Trend Micro Researchers discovered what the company described as an “exceptional infection related to the Xcode developer project,” where the malware integrates itself into the project itself. The malware was found to have multiple payload possibilities. Although it poses a potential risk to end users using software developed through Apple IDE, it actually seems to be a bigger problem for developers.

The malware is part of the XCSSET family. It was found to contain files that could enable “command and control” of the target system, that is, it would allow the attacker using the malware to control the infected Mac, thereby allowing various operations on the infected system, including obtaining personal data and Performing ransomware-style attacks involving encryption.

The team believes that the unusualness of the malware lies in its distribution method, which is “injected into the local Xcode project so that the malicious code can be run when the project is built.” It is still not clear how the coded was injected into the project.

For developers who rely on the collaboration with others, Trend Micro believes that the threat would be more serious when projects are shared through GitHub and other code repositories. Because this may lead to “users who rely on these repositories suffer attacks similar to the supply chain and become dependencies in their own projects.”

After installation, the malware can attack Safari and other browsers on the Mac to obtain valuable user data. The zero-day vulnerabilities discovered included data Vault issues that bypassed the system integrity protection feature of macOS, and vulnerabilities that were created in Safari for WebKit Development to run fake Safari applications instead of legitimate versions.

So far, the malware has only been discovered in the two Xcode projects through research. These projects are considered not widely used by other developers, thus limiting the adverse effects.

Apple has just released the first public beta of macOS 11 Big Sur, which allows non-developers to try the software before its public release this fall.

Testers who have joined the Apple Beta testing program, after installing the correct configuration file, can download macOS Big Sur Beta through the “Software Update” in “System Preferences.”

Mac users who want to be part of the Beta testing program can access iOS, macOS, watchOS and tvOS Betas via the registration page. Beta testers should make a full backup before installing ‌macOS Big Sur‌, and because Beta may be unstable, it may not be wise to install updates on the main computer.

macOS Big Sur introduced an improved design for the operating systems, which makes both macOS and iOS more similar. Also, this update introduced the Control Center to the Mac for the first time, allowing faster access to system controls such as volume, keyboard brightness, screen brightness, Wi-Fi connection, etc.

The updated notification center includes more interactive notifications and redesigned widgets. Notifications have also been grouped by application, and users can customize what “widgets” are displayed.

Safari has a new customizable start page with built-in translation and “privacy report” function, which allows you to know which trackers each website uses to track your entire network. The Mac App Store supports new extension categories, and now you can control the specific sites, on which extensions can be used.

Mac information applications have also been comprehensively improved to make them more consistent with iOS applications, and support fixed conversations.

The redesigned map app in macOS Big Sur adds support for look around, indoor maps, guides, and shared ETA updates. In addition, it can be used to generate bicycle routes and routes with electric car charging stations, and send them to iPhone.

There are also minor updates for applications such as photos, music, and home.

A user on Twitter earlier today claimed that Apple may release a new Intel-based iMac this week, but they will have to wait until Apple Silicon is launched before making some major design changes.

A tweet that surfaced claimed that Apple is about to release a new product strategy, especially its iMac series of products. Although there have been complaints surrounding the Mac series, the discussion is mainly about future Apple Silicon-based products. But it is worth mentioning that during the two-year transition period, Intel-based Macs will still have new products launched.

9to5Mac first reported a tweet from the whistleblower @Soybeys, stating that the new Intel iMac “may be released this week” and Apple will unveil its launch time on Monday. If the rumors were true, Apple should be preparing configuration improvements for the device, rather than making any design changes.

The second whistleblower @Jioriku further emphasized this point, claiming that “iMac redesign will not be introduced in the 10th generation Intel update. They are putting design updates on products using their own chips.”

The icon found in the June iOS 14 version indicates that Apple is using a narrower frame to redesign the iMac with a design language similar to the iPad Pro. Apple may wait for major changes inside the iMac in order to introduce a redesigned product, which seems reasonable.

A report issued by DigiTimes in mid-June also claimed that sometime in the second half of 2020, there will be new iMac and iPad models on the market.

Sales in the third quarter will grow to about 4 million.

According to supply chain news, with the coming back to school season, Apple will “substantially increase” MacBook Pro orders in the third quarter of this year.

DigiTimes reported that Apple would also respond to sales growth in the creative market. Due to the continuing global health crisis, some countries have begun to blockade regions and cities. Apple needs to respond to the trend of a greatly increasing growth in the number of professionals working at home in the second half of the year.

According to DigiTimes, Apple sold 3.2-3.5 million MacBooks in the second quarter of 2020, and sales in the third quarter are expected to grow to about 4 million. Therefore, Apple will see its overall MacBook shipments increase by more than 20% in the third quarter.

Apple has planned to switch to its own processor from the end of the year, and plans to deliver the first ‌Mac supported by Apple Silicon by the end of this year. But we are still not sure when the first ARM-based Mac will be releasedand which model it will be. According to Apple analysts, the 13.3-inch MacBook Pro may be the first Mac to use an Apple processor chip.

It is expected that this MacBook Pro will be put into mass production in the fourth quarter of this year, and we may also see an ARM-based MacBook Air at the end of this year or the first quarter of next year.

Although Apple is also expected to launch a redesigned iMac this year, it may still carry Intel chips.

Apple said at the WWDC meeting a few days ago that the Apple Silicon Mac will introduce a new system for accessing macOS recovery and security options at startup.

Existing Macs contain many macOS recovery options at startup, which can be accessed using key combinations. For example, Command-R boots the Mac in recovery mode, while Command-Option-P-R resets NVRAM. On Apple Silicon Mac, these key combinations will be replaced by the Startup Manager interface on the screen.

In the new system architecture, users can press and hold the power button on the Mac to access the new startup screen, which has recovery options for reinstalling macOS and options for normal startup, shutdown, and restart.

Apple also replaced the target disk mode with “Mac sharing mode”, which is used to transfer data between two Macs. Mac sharing mode turns the system into an SMB file sharing server, providing file-level access to user data for another Mac. User authentication is required to access the service.

In addition, the new feature – boot disk allows users to choose different security modes for the boot volume. Full security, which is enabled by default, provides the same optimal security as that on iOS devices and allows users to boot from external disks without reducing the security of the system.

At the same time, the “Reduce Security” mode allows users to disable “System Integrity Protection” and run any version of macOS, including those that are no longer signed by Apple, providing greater flexibility.

Finally, Apple Silicon Mac runs a separate security policy for each operating system installation, while Intel-based Macs run on a less flexible system-wide security policy.

In macOS Big Sur, Safari will support more types of web extensions, and Apple will also make it easier to port the existing extensions from other browsers.

Although Safari supports extensions, there are not many extensions available compared to browsers like Google Chrome or Firefox. In macOS Big Sur, Apple will introduce other support for Safari Web extensions.

At the WWDC developer conference, Apple announced Safari Web Extensions. Essentially, browsers will use extension APIs similar to Chrome and Firefox. For Mac users, this means that Safari will now support a wider range of extensions.

Previously, Safari only allowed sharing extensions or content blockers. Looking ahead, the Safari Web extensions will make it easier for developers to use JavaScript, HTML, and CSS technologies to write useful add-ons.

Apple is taking a slightly different approach from browsers such as Firefox. Safari Web Extensions will be packaged with native applications, even though these applications themselves can simply be used as placeholders to facilitate approval through the App Store.

The company also released tools in Xcode 12, which will make it easier for extension creators to port their existing browser plug-ins to Safari.

In addition to the extension function improvements, Apple has also enhanced the design, performance and privacy of Safari in macOS Big Sur.

According to the news, Apple has been seeking permission from publishers participating in its premium payment plan in recent months to produce an audio version of the stories that are published on Apple News+.

Two sources revealed that Apple will undertake the cost of manufacturing audio content, and will make up for the publishers in the same way as it compensate for them. Usually, very few publications sign contracts with freelance writers and Apple, allowing this to be done without special consent or additional fees. After all, converting text content to audio is a reutilization.

Another source pointed out that they did not see any evidence at all to suggest that the audiences of Apple News+ would want audio content. Another publisher said that they are worried about the payment, after all, readers can read multiple articles with the time they listen to an audio story.

A Reddit user (via MacRumors) pointed out that Apple’s education website showed the picture of MacBook Pro running Logic Pro X. Interestingly, the Logic Pro X interface of this picture seems to show the Live Loops function in Logic Pro X of Mac.

The Live Loops feature first appeared on the iPad in 2016, and Apple called it “a new and intuitive way to create amazing music.” Live Loops contains various Apple-designed loop templates that can create music through unique cells and list-based designs.

There is no indication when Apple will release the next version of Logic Pro X. As of now, Apple has not yet deleted the said picture from its education website.

It is worth mentioning that Apple last week extended the free trial period of Final Cut Pro X from 30 days to 90 days. The company also added a new free trial option for Logic Pro X, allowing users to try the application for up to 90 days.

Are you a Logic Pro X user? What do you think of the Live Loops feature on Mac?
